Mining History

The North Staffordshire Mining History Group, 2007

The Sutherland Papers contain an extensive collection of mining documents relating to the history of the North Staffordshire Coalfield in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Maps and plans, coal accounts and time and wages books survive alongside correspondence relating to the lives of people involved with mining on the Sutherland estates during the nineteenth century.

The North Staffordshire Mining History Group have worked with the Sutherland Papers examining and interpreting these fascinating documents since 2006. They have created many pages and articles exploring everything from geological statistics to the stories of miners working at the Sutherland collieries in Brora.
