Stafford House Committee
The Stafford House Committee and Overseas Aid
During the late nineteenth century, George Granville William Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1828-1892), the third Duke of Sutherland, was the Chairman of the Stafford House Committee. Throughout the late nineteenth century this voluntary committee was involved in philanthropic work, including fundraising to provide overseas aid to sick and wounded soldiers in the Russo Turkish and Zulu Wars.
The Sutherland Papers include many documents such as scrapbooks and newspaper articles which tell us about the Stafford House Committee’s work providing overseas aid to relieve sick and wounded soldiers. These documents provide an insight into both the political context in which the schemes were established and public opinion of the schemes at the time they were launched. In addition, the collection contains printed reports and international correspondence written by doctors and soldiers who were affected by the work of the Stafford House Committee.
