Civil War

The Sutherland Papers contain a wide variety of documents from the Civil War (1642-1646). Parliamentary petitions from early in the conflict feature alongside political newsletters and Royalist propaganda. In addition, the collection includes a vast range of correspondence and many accounts describing military engagements throughout the war.

The Sutherland Papers also include documents about the conduct of the war in Staffordshire, including letters written both to and by Sir Richard Leveson (1598-1661) who was a leading Royalist commander in the County. This correspondence includes a letter written by King Charles I to Sir Richard demanding military resources. A fascinating eye-witness account of the famous battle of Hopton Heath just outside Stafford also survives in the collection.
