Mansion House Committee
The Mansion House Committee and Food Supply
Through his involvement with the Mansion House Committee, in 1903 Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1851-1913), the fourth Duke of Sutherland, became Chairman of the ‘Association to Promote an Official Inquiry into the Security of our Food Supply in Time of War’. The Association was established in the light of a recognition that Britain had been under prepared for the Boer War of 1899 -1901 and a fear of war in the future.
The Sutherland Papers include a wealth of printed pamphlets and papers relating to the Association and the issues surrounding its foundation amidst the naval arms race between Britain and Germany and the diplomatic manoeuvring which the great powers undertook.
