Staffordshire Politics

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Leveson-Gower family played an influential role in Staffordshire politics. The Sutherland Papers contain many fascinating documents relating to local elections in Lichfield and Newcastle during this period, including election accounts and reports into allegations of corruption. In addition, the collection contains a wide range of material relating to the Staffordshire County Election of 1820.

During the early twentieth century the fourth Duke of Sutherland, Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1851-1913) was involved in debates concerning the Federation of the Six Towns of Stoke-on-Trent. The Sutherland Papers include many documents telling us about the development of North Staffordshire during this period.
