The Stafford House Committee and Overseas Aid

The third Duke of Sutherland, George Granville William Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1828-1892) was involved in establishing the Stafford House Committee in the late nineteenth century. This voluntary association was responsible for raising money to provide relief to troops serving overseas in the Russo-Turkish and Zulu Wars in the 1870s and 1890s. The Sutherland Papers contain many documents, including letters from doctors working at the front, which tell us about the important humanitarian work undertaken by the Stafford House Committee in both of these conflicts.
