Trentham and Lilleshall Savings Banks
Between December 1817 and January 1818 two savings banks were established on the Sutherland estates in Trentham and Lilleshall. Both banks were intended for ‘the safe custody and increase of small savings belonging to the industrious classes’. They provided savings accounts to both individuals and groups including local Sunday Schools, and were founded in order to encourage local people living in Staffordshire and Shropshire to save their earnings.
The Sutherland Papers contain a wide range of documents relating to these institutions. Correspondence, Committee minute books, printed rules and Depositors’ Check Books provide an insight into the savings banks established in Trentham and Lilleshall in the early nineteenth century.
The Bank books for individual depositors in the Trentham bank have been indexed as part of the Sutherland Papers Project and can be searched here.
