Philanthropic Hanford

The township of Hanford situated north of Trentham on the Newcastle Road was part of the Sutherland estates in North Staffordshire. During the nineteenth century the Dukes of Sutherland were instrumental in the development of Hanford, donating land for the extension of educational facilities in the village, and financing the construction of a children's home.

The Sutherland Collection contains plans, letters and memoranda relating to these initiatives, telling us about the development of Hanford during the nineteenth century.
