Tracing Our Ancestors in the Sutherland Papers

In addition to the wealth of correspondence which survives in the Sutherland Papers, Estate Rentals, Estate Accounts and the many plans and surveys in the collection allow us to trace the history of families living on the Sutherland estates. Tracing our Ancestors in the Sutherland Papers demonstrates how documents in the Sutherland Papers were used to find out about the Rhead family who were farmers in Hanchurch during the eighteenth century. In 1769 Hannah Hordern, a tallow chandler in Newcastle-under-Lyme, wrote to Granville Leveson-Gower (1721-1803) concerned about her role supplying candles to Trentham Hall. Click on the links below to find out how documents in the Sutherland Papers tell the story of her family’s business from 1681-1778.
