Artists & Architects

During the nineteenth century the Leveson-Gower family were involved with many prominent artists and architects, including the famous portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence. Letters in the Sutherland Papers reveal that the family employed artists such as John Martin to produce works of art for their many properties. Other artists from the period wrote to the Leveson-Gowers hoping to secure the family’s patronage. Many of these letters, particularly those written by artist Benjamin Robert Haydon, include sketches. Architects including Sir Charles Barry and James Trubshaw were employed by the Leveson-Gowers to design and oversee the rebuilding of their properties.
