Misfortune & Money in the Sutherland Papers

As one of England’s wealthiest families, the Leveson-Gowers received many letters from distressed people appealing for financial support. These letters came from all over the country and in some cases from overseas. They tell us much about people’s lives in the early nineteenth century, particularly the kinds of hardship faced by people unable to support their families.
