Life on the Sutherland Estates

The Leveson-Gower family’s influence extended beyond Staffordshire, something which is reflected in the hundreds of letters sent to the family by ordinary people from all over the country. The family were extensive landowners with estates in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands. Many people wrote to the family about life on the estates during the nineteenth century concerning matters such as repairs to housing, community projects and agricultural practice.
