The Leveson Family, 1550-1605

The late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries were an exciting time for the Leveson family who were prominent in political and military roles during this period. The Sutherland Papers contain legal documents relating to Sir Walter Leveson’s turbulent life of debt and accusations of piracy brought against him in the late sixteenth century. Sir John Leveson of Halling enjoyed a successful career as the Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, defending the county against Spanish invasion during the Armada and apprehending the Earl of Essex in his revolt against Queen Elizabeth in 1601. The charismatic Sir Richard Leveson made his name in the English Navy and was created Vice Admiral by James I in 1604.
