Handwriting

Palaeography, or the study of old handwriting can be fascinating. The documents of the sixteenth and seventeenth century are written in a style of handwriting called ‘Secretary Hand’. While many of the letters and letter shapes in this style are the same or very similar to modern English letters, there are others which are quite confusing at first. Using the documents in the Sutherland Collection we have created three wordsearch puzzles to help you practice recognising the letter shapes.

The letters and words all come from the documents created or collected by Sir John Leveson of Halling in the late 1580s and 1590s, when he was closely involved preparing the county of Kent against a possible Spanish invasion.
