Dogs on the Sutherland Estates
The Leveson-Gower family were enthusiastic dog-owners. As well as the pets that lived in their households, the family’s properties in Staffordshire, and Scotland had kennels for the hunting dogs that were an essential part of aristocratic country pursuits. The fourth Duke was particularly enthusiastic and was master of the North Staffordshire Hunt for many years. The Sutherland Papers contain a variety of documents relating to the lives of dogs on the Sutherland estates, including pedigrees, memoranda and accounts.
